Donut Chart

Donut charts, like pie charts, are used to compare categorical data.

The demo below displays the car’s registration by February 2020 in Norway; the demo is a comparison of the data of electric cars, hybrids, diesel, and petrol cars.

Nice to know

Pros:
  1. 1.

Donut charts, like pie charts, are easy to create and understand.

  2. 2.

The donut chart, similar to the pie chart, offers a compact shape that makes it an excellent choice to fit into a dashboard and/or small screens.

Cons:
  1. Take caution to not overload the chart with excessive categories. This could result in confusion among the audience due to the crowded data in a compact chart. Alternatively, one can use a treemap to visualize a large data set.

  2. Donut charts are limited to a single time frame, as it is not possible to show data trends overtime.

Accessibility

The donut chart can be easily adapted to suit the color-blind community (see below), by either adding a pattern fill chart or a or a monochrome chart.
